We are a locally owned coffee shop and café conveniently located in downtown Munising; a perfect location for both travelers and residents. We provide free wireless internet, homemade food with vegan and gluten-free options, custom roasted coffee and gourmet tea, and yes, we do have delicious Jilbert’s Dairy Ice Cream!
From the local artist exhibits, to the live music and events that inspire us, to the thousands of hand-selected books among the shelves, the Falling Rock Café is much more than the comfy atmosphere, the delicious food, and the custom roasted coffee we serve.

Custom Roasted Coffee
We are Great Lakes Coffee Company, housed in the Falling Rock Café and Bookstore. We found that our coffee is inherently what connects people to our café, so we created Great Lakes Coffee Company with the goal of bringing the finest, freshest coffees from around the world to our customers. We are not a franchise; we are unique and owned and operated by Justin and Elizabeth White, with a fantastic manager and team of employees.
Given names reflecting our local area, all the coffees in our Great Lakes Coffee Company have been chosen as a favorite at one time or another by each of our customers. But overall, the Grand Island Roast consistently stays on the top of the list. A dark, strong roast with just the right amount of bitter, we serve 5 times more of the Grand Island Roast than any of our other names.
Munising Morning, which is lighter and slightly mellow, comes in second with Lake Superior Blend right behind it (bolder and more adventurous than Munising Morning, but less dry and acidic than Grand Island Roast). A close third is the fruity Michigan Cherry. Ridiculed by “real” coffee roasters as too sweet and flowery, this is very popular with both locals and tourists drawn to its true Michigan origin. Roasted with the flavoring, rather than just mixing flavor in with the beans, our roaster has created a product that has taken on a life of its own!

Live music in the upper peninsula has become a regular occurrence at the Falling Rock as talented performers fill our café with eclectic music throughout every the month.

Live music nights have been a part of life at the Falling Rock Café and Bookstore ever since we opened in June of 2003. Our musicians come from all over Alger county, the U.P., the state, the country, and even the world! Some of them work day jobs. Some of them are full-time musicians. Some of them write their own songs, and some of them play covers. But all of them share their talent and love for music and the community, and all of them fill our café with love, light and joy. Stop in for a listen!
